Mathis enters transfer portal

After reports surfaced last Saturday that redshirt freshman quarterback D’Wan Mathis was no longer with the Georgia team, the speculation immediately turned to when the former four-star quarterback would enter the transfer portal.

UGASports.com confirmed that decision came to fruition on Monday morning.

“As far as D’Wan goes, like I said the other night, he has handled everything first class. Every conversation he’s had with me has been the right way. He did not want to be a distraction for the team, and he was very hurt and disappointed that things came out before the game. That bothered him because he did not want to be a distraction for the team," Kirby Smart said on Monday. "He wanted to handle it the right way, and he wanted it to come out today when he entered the portal and that is exactly what he asked and that is what we did. I am excited to see his future. He’s going to be a really good football player. We want him to stay here — there’s no doubt we want him to stay here. We have encouraged him to stay here. But I also respect that is his decision, and we are going to help him every way we can with a transition. I think he’s got a bright future.”

Mathis, who completed just 12 passes in his Georgia career, will now look for a new playing home, after having started the season as the number one quarterback on the depth chart.

He was benched in favor of Stetson Bennett in the first game of the 2020 season, and he appeared sparingly since, only seeing in-game action against the Florida Gators.

With the recovery and subsequent ascension of JT Daniels on the Georgia depth chart, it appeared as though the Bulldogs had moved on from Mathis moving forward.

Assuming he follows through with the transfer, Mathis finishes his career at Georgia with 89 yards passing, one touchdown, three interceptions, and a completion percentage of 40 percent.

He was a 2019 signee, flipping his commitment from Ohio State following the news of the transfer of Justin Fields to the Buckeyes.
