As The Quarterbacks Turn...

Those expecting head coach Kirby Smart to make some sort of announcement Wednesday regarding his starting quarterback are going to be disappointed.

There was not one.

After last Saturday’s scrimmage, Smart said he hoped to have an update after watching the film. That’s apparently not the case.

“It’s not really clear,” Smart said after practice Wednesday. “We’re going to eventually narrow it down to two. We haven’t done that yet. I don’t have a timeline for doing it. I’ll evaluate them day by day.”

Last week, freshman Jacob Eason worked predominately with the ones, but so far with 10 days to go before the season-opener against North Carolina, Greyson Lambert and Brice Ramsey are apparently still in the mix.

At least that’s what Smart is saying publicly.

“We’re still working through it,” Smart said. “All three guys are still working and rotating in there and we’ll continue to do it until we figure it out.”

And how long will that take?

“Like I said, we’ll continue to work on it until we figure it out,” Smart said. “Hopefully, it will work itself out in the next couple of days but so far nobody has jumped out.”

Smart did say the next few days will be crucial, however.

With Georgia starting to work on its gameplan for North Carolina, how each quarterback handles that process could ultimately tip the scales.

Otherwise, Smart insists that none of the three have jumped out to prove that they deserve to start the game.

“All three of them at times have…and all three of them at times haven’t,” Smart said. “It depends on which time you’re talking about. Would it be during the scrimmage, would it be like two-minute (drills), short yardage and goal line … or reading the defense? There’s a lot of things to go into how many quarterbacks have shown me they can handle the system.

“We’ve got to make some decisions and go forward and we’ll do that in due time.”
