Ole Miss eyes Texas JUCO WR
Dexter Ransom's name isn't listed as a prospect, but that's changed over the last two-plus years.Go all the way back to the 2007 recruiting class and
While Ransom can hardly be classified as red-hot in recruiting circles, he has quietly amassed an impressive offer list that includes a dozen offers with the likes of Ole Miss, Auburn, California and Oklahoma State in the mix.
"I got a few letters my high school year, but no offers," Ransom said on Tuesday evening. "I didn't qualify coming out of high school, so it really didn't make any difference and I decided to go to junior college."
Ransom, a 6-foot-4, 217 pound wide receiver prospect, who runs a 4.55 40-yard dash, redshirted his first year at Blinn C.C. in Brenham, Texas and played last fall as a freshman where he had 36 catches for 734 yards - an average of over 20-yards per catch - and accounted for ten touchdowns.
Ole Miss isn't exactly a "Johnny-come-lately," having offered last spring according to Ransom.
"I've talked to the coaches twice - once after they faxed my offer - and I'm getting a lot of mail from them," Ransom said. "I'm going to consider them because they're in the SEC and they say that the SEC is the toughest conference to play in. I am grateful to them for the offer."
Ransom, who played his high school ball at Seguin, Texas, said he is on track to graduate in December and sign with the team of his choice. Due to the redshirt year, he will only have two years of eligibility and must complete that in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
One thing that Ransom will look at in a new school is the quarterback and wide receiver depth situation. Ransom should be accustomed to catching balls from a Division I-level quarterback when he transfers after this season. His quarterback at Blinn this fall likely will be former Florida five-star quarterback Cameron Newton, who recently signed with the Bucs.
Meanwhile, Ransom faces the dilemma of having little time to visit schools that have offered. He's now in fall practice and will have to set visits after his team's mostly Thursday night games or during a bye week and likely will have limited opportunities in December for visits prior to early signing period which begins around mid-December.
"I'm looking at going to Arizona on Sept. 4 and I've been talking to Utah about a visit, but haven't set a date," he said. "I'd definitely like to visit Ole Miss."
There is already a relationship between Blinn and Ole Miss - thanks to the Rebels signing Emmanuel Stephens as part of the 2008 signing class. Ransom was a redshirt freshman during Stephens' sophomore year at Blinn.
"We (Blinn team) watched Ole Miss some last year, definitely during the Cotton Bowl," he said. "A lot of us know Emmanuel and we are definitely keeping up with Ole Miss this year."
Ransom says he doesn't have a timeline for making a verbal pledge, but did say that distance from home will not factor into his decision.
