Dawgs wrap up two-game road swing

This game will be the fifth all-time meeting between these two schools. Illinois has won all four of the previous meetings, most recently when the Illini defeated Georgia in the second round of the 1985 NCAA Tournament in At¬lanta. Saturday's game is the first of a 2-year, neutral-court series between the two programs. They'll meet again during December of 2009 in a game slated for the Arena at Gwinnett Center in the Atlanta suburb of Duluth. Dennis Felton-coached Georgia teams have played there twice: vs. Georgia State in Dec. of 2005 and vs. Gonzaga in Dec. of 2006.

More on the Bulldogs

Freshman Trey Thompkins was named Monday as the SEC's Freshman of the Week. The Lithonia native played in his first two collegiate games last week. He'd been sidelined by a variety of injuries throughout the summer and pre-season period, most recently a high ankle sprain that had kept him out of Georgia's first four games. Already, Thompkins leads the Bulldogs in scoring average at 14.3 points per game, having reached double figures in all three games to date.

Versus the Big Ten

Thanks mostly to post-season and invita¬tional tournaments, Georgia has an extensive history of games (7-20 all-time record) against the current membership in the Big Ten Confer¬ence. Bulldog teams have played eight of the 11 schools, including home-and-home series against four of them: 0-4 vs. Illinois; 0-3 vs. Indiana; 1-1 vs. Iowa; 1-4 vs. Minnesota; 2-1 vs. Penn State; 1-3 vs. Pur¬due; 2-2 vs. Wisconsin; and 0-2 vs. Michigan. Georgia has played Illinois and Purdue in the NCAA Tournament, as well as Iowa and Purdue in the NIT.

About Illinois

The Illini dropped a heartbreaker to Clemson on Tuesday night at the Assembly Hall, falling 76-74 in the 10th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge. After leading at halftime and for much of the second half, Clemson went on a 9-1 run to go up by five with two minutes remaining. Illinois made it a one possession game after a 3-pointer and pair of free throws by Demetri McCamey. Trailing by two, the Illini fouled Demontez Stitt with 10 seconds left. Stitt missed the front end, and Illinois had one chance left to either go for the win or force overtime. But Illinois could not get a shot off before the buzzer.
