UGA Sports Notebook

SACRAMENTO, Calif.----- Six University of Georgia Track and Field athletes advanced beyond the initial rounds of their respective events on day one of the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif.

2005 SEC Champion Trevor Snyder placed second as he threw a 232-09 in the qualifying round of men's javelin. Snyder advanced to Friday's final, scheduled for 8 p.m. EST.

Demiko Goodman ran the men's 400 meters in 46.26 in the first round of trials, moving on to Friday's semifinal at 10:25 EST.

Brad Smith tied 12 other men's pole vault competitors for the highest mark of the day, clearing 16-10.75. The event was delayed due to intermittent rain, but Smith moved on to the final round, set for Friday at 9:30 EST.

Simon Ngata rounded out a seventh-place finish in the men's 5000 meters preliminaries with a finishing time of 13:54.79. He will compete on Saturday at 10:50 EST in the final race.

Both Krista Woodward (5th, 164-06) and Sigrun Fjeldsted (10th, 155-04) moved on after their marks in the women's javelin preliminaries. The final is scheduled for Friday at 11 p.m. EST.

Other competitors in Wednesday's initial rounds included John Newell, who competed in men's hammer (24th, 195-02) and men's shot put (18th, 58-4.00), and Ian Burrell (26th, 14:45.04) in the men's 5000 meters.

Competition at the 2005 national meet resumes Thursday at 3:30 p.m. EST. Jenny Dahlgren and Sultana Frizell will open the day for Georgia in women's hammer at 4 p.m. EST. Complete real-time results from the meet are available at www.ncaachampionships.com.
