Breaking down UGA's roster and recruiting

It is never too early to start looking at the next signing day, and now that the May evaluation period draws to a close we thought it was a good time to take a quick look at where Georgia will be this time next year. Here is a quick look at what the Bulldogs' roster will look like following the 2005 football season, and an estimation of the ideal breakdown of signees for the Class of 2006. Also, a few names of the most likely prospects to fill that signing day roster.

First, an explanation of how the information is presented.

"Total" indicates returning players, the number in parenthesis is returning starters based on where they stand as of now for the 2006 season.

"Need/Committed" indicates our best guess as to how many prospects are needed at that position to keep the pipeline full, and then how many have already committed.

"Name" - Players in bold are the likely starters based on their being starters currently. Players in italics are incoming freshmen for 2005. All incoming freshman are listed listed as such even though several may play in 2005. Brandon Sesay, Corey Moon, and Darius Dewberry are not listed as they have not qualified at this point.

"Yr." indicates their year according to eligibility heading into 2006.

The "Best Bets for Signing Day" section indicates prospects that UGASports.com feels have the best shot at this point to sign with Georgia--in other words, if signing day was today and everybody had been offered, these are the guys who would most likely sign. "Committed" lists those prospects that have already publicly committed to UGA. The "Offers" section is not a complete list of all prospects offered at that position, just as the "Others" section does not list all others involved, rather, both sections list those prospects that UGASports.com feels have the best shot at this point as signing with Georgia next February. For a complete listing of prospects offered by Georgia (there may be more, but these we have confirmed) click here.

Notes below ....

  • Quarterback Total - The Bulldogs already have a verbal commitment from Matthew Stafford who plans to enroll at UGA in December.
  • Center Total - Several guards could also be moved to center.
  • Howard was moved from linebacker to defensive end for pass rush situations this past spring. He is undersized to be a full-time defensive end and could still be moved back to linebacker.
  • Ellerbe is currently at linebacker, but the coaching staff has likened him to Thomas Davis who began his career at linebacker but ended as an All SEC safety for the Bulldogs. Davis was the first Georgia player selected in the last NFL draft.
  • Evans, J. Bryant, and Byrd have all been talked about as possibly seeing playing time at receiver later in their careers.
  • Sanni-Osomo has been bothered by knee problems through his career at UGA. He redshirted in 2002, played in six games in 2003, missed all of 2004, and sat out this past spring.
  • Grand Total does not include kickers Andy Bailey and Brandon Coutu and punter Gordon Ely-Kelso
  • Linebacker Josh Johnson is expected to return to UGA next year after his time at Georgia Military.
  • Turner can play any of the offensive line positions.

  • Richardson, Fayson, Fannin, and Tyler are all listed as athletes and could play a variety of positions.
  • Davis could end up playing OL.
  • Tripp is listed as an OL/DT but UGA is recruiting him as a Defensive End.
