Leinart Named Walter Camp Player Of The Year

Junior quarterback Matt Leinart has been selected as the 2004 Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year the foundation announced on Thursday (Dec. 9) while Leinart, senior defensive tackle Shaun Cody and senior linebacker Matt Grootegoed were all named to the 2004 Walter Camp All-American first team.

Leinart is the 38th recipient of the Walter Camp Player of the Year award and the fourth Trojan (O.J. Simpson, 1967 and 1968; Charles White, 1979; and Marcus Allen, 1981) to capture the honor.

Other finalists for the award included Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson, USC running back Reggie Bush, Utah quarterback Alex Smith, and Oklahoma quarterback Jason White.





Leinart's and Grootegoed's All-American nods were their second of the postseason after being named earlier to the Football Coaches Association team. It is also Cody's second selection after being included on SportsIllustrated.com's All-American first team. Bush, junior linebacker Lofa Tatupu and senior defensive tackle Mike Patterson have also been tabbed as All-American first teamers in 2004, giving USC six overall, its most ever in on season.

Bush was named to the Walter Camp All-American second team at running back.
