2017 WR D.J. Matthews commits to FSU
FSU picked up its first commitment in the class of 2017 on Thursday. First Coast (Jacksonville) wide receiver D.J. Matthews told head coach Jimbo Fisher and receivers coach Lawrence Dawsey he was ready to "take his talent to Tallahassee."
Matthews told Warchant.com he picked FSU because it has always been his dream school. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound prospect will only be entering his sophomore season in high school this fall, but told himself early on he'd commit if he picked up an FSU offer.
Matthews is the first commitment for the Seminoles at the Jimbo Fisher Camp this week, which began on Wednesday and ends on Friday.
Matthews described himself as an explosive athlete who will fit in well with the FSU offense.
"I feel like I can make things happen every time I touch the ball," he said.
He said he's closest with current FSU linebacker Reggie Northrup and defensive back Tyrell Lyons, both First Coast products. Matthews said he's also close with quarterback commit De'Andre Johnson, a 2015 prospect from First Coast. He said Johnson was especially excited when he heard the news.
Matthews said he's excited to be a part of the Florida State family. He plans to stay in Tallahassee until Friday.
He also wants to continue the connection from First Coast to Florida State. Now that he's committed, he said he'll start recruiting teammate William Sweet. The offensive lineman is an FSU target and one of Matthews' close friends.
