QB Ranch: Will Rossley see another Favre, Manziel?
SOUTHLAKE - When former Green Bay and Texas A&M assistant Tom Rossley is working at the Under Armour Quarterback Ranch, he never knows if he's going to see another Brett Favre or Johnny Manziel. But Rossley wasn't expecting to find transcendent players like them them either.
Rossley coached Favre with the Packers and he and former A&M coach Mike Sherman took the chance on Manziel as a quarterback despite the concerns of others about Manziel's lace of size. The Rossley legacy is that he made the comparison between Favre and Manziel three years ago _ long before Manziel catapulted A&M's program to national prominence with his Heisman Trophy winning season in 2012.
With 6-0 Manziel about to begin his rookie year as a Cleveland Browns' first-round draft pick, Rossley is sticking to his comparison.
"Johnny's going to even better as a pro than in college," Rossley said. "He is magic. He looked the same as Brett with big hands, big feet, the ability to extend plays. Brett is a little taller but Johnny is a little more accurate. And the thing the have in common is that they treat practice like a game. They keep getting better."
Rossley is part of a high-powered staff brought in for the UA Passing Academy for two days of coaching with nearly 100 promising players.
While former NFL quarterback Jim Zorn (Seattle's first Russell Wilson) works with top Class of 2016 recruits Brennen Wooten of Marble Falls, Rowlett's Logan Bonner and Mansfield Lake Ridge's Jett Duffey, Rossley works with promising players like Duncanville senior Stedman Lannigan, who missed last season with a knee injury.
