Sound Mind Sound Body Camp preview

MORE: Complete Five-Star Challenge coverage

The Sound Mind Sound Body Camp is in its 10th year hosting its summer camp in the Detroit area, but this will be the first time the event takes place at Chandler Park Academy.

Sound Mind Sound Body has been bringing together college coaches and high school athletes in a growing number over the last 10 years. The 2014 version of the event, which runs June 12-13, appears to be the biggest yet from both a participant and coaching standpoint.

Coaches from 44 college programs ranging from NAIA to the FBS's Big Five conferences will be working the camp. That includes Big Ten head coaches Tim Beckman (Illinois), Mark Dantonio (Michigan State), James Franklin (Penn State), Brady Hoke (Michigan), Jerry Kill (Minnesota) and Kevin Wilson (Indiana).

The 500-plus players working out with and for those coaches include prospects from states as far away as California, Texas and Florida. Close to 100 of those players already hold Division I offers, most from Big Five conference programs. Here is a break down of the top prospects expected to attend by position.

Sound Mind Sound Body Camp Position Breakdown
QUARTERBACK
Class of 2016 QB Messiah DeWeaver holds several Big Five conference offers.
The group of passers expected to attend this week's SMSB camp include three-stars such as Detroit Cass Tech's Jayru Campbell, Green Bay (Wisc.) Ashwaubenon's James Morgan and Yorktown's (Ind.) Riley Neal, but also 2016 quarterbacks Messiah DeWeaver of Trotwood-Madison (Ohio) and Seth Green of Woodbury (Minn.) East Ridge, who already hold multiple Big Five conference offers. With so many college coaches in attendance, this will be a big week for Morgan and Neal, whose offer lists do not yet match their talent.
RUNNING BACK
Four-star Mike Weber highlights the running back group.
The running back group will be one of the more intriguing to watch this week with familiar names like Detroit Cass Tech four-star Mike Weber and Indianapolis Brebeuf Jesuit three-star Levante Bellamy headlining. Three-star speedster Joshuwa Holloman of Auburn Hills (Mich.) Avondale has a host of Mid-American Conference offers but has yet to add his first Big Five conference offer, while underclassmen Matt Falcon of Southfield, Mich., and Martell Pettaway of Saint Clair Shores (Mich.) South Lake should be national recruits before all is said and done.
WIDE RECEIVER
Equanimeous St. Brown has been at the SMSB Camp before and may participate this week.
There is talk that Rivals250 prospects Equanimeous St. Brown, Brian Cole and Stanley Norman may make appearances at this year's SMSB Camp. St. Brown and Cole have participated in this event before, but among the prospects who are already registered, Cincinnati (Ohio) Princeton three-star Elijah Ball will certainly be one to watch. He had a strong showing at the Columbus Rivals camp in April. Northern Illinois commit Daniel Crawford will headline the tight end group while Detroit Cass Tech's Donovan Peoples-Jones, who recently grabbed his first offer from Ohio State, highlights a strong underclass group.
OFFENSIVE LINE
David Moorman is committed to Wisconsin.
SMSB has always featured a deep group of offensive linemen, and 2014 will be no different. Michigan State commit Kyonta Stallworth and Wisconsin commit David Moorman had a great battle at the Detroit Rivals Camp in April, and will resurrect their competition this week. State of Michigan underclassmen Thiyo Lukusa and Emani Mason are Big Five conference talents who will add depth to the position. Keep an eye on Detroit King's Eric Martin who was a revelation at the Detroit RCS and could work his way into his first offers with another strong showing this week.
DEFENSIVE LINE
Jashon Cornell was one of the top defensive linemen during the Rivals Camp Series.
It is a good thing the offensive line group is deep, because the defensive line group will feature a host of big-name talents. Rivals100 defensive end Jashon Cornell, fresh off his showing at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by Under Armour this past weekend, will be joined by fellow four-star Neville Gallimore of Canada and three-star Joshua Alabi, Shahid Bellamy, Immanuel Stinson and Brandon Tiassum. Among the underclassmen, Detroit Cass Tech's Michael Onwenu and Woodbury (Minn.) East Ridge's JoJo Garcia have already established themselves as national prospects.
LINEBACKER
Daelin Hayes is one of the top Midwest prospects in the class of 2016.
Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary's Daelin Hayes is making a strong case to start off as the Midwest's top prospect, at any position, in the 2016 class. He will get another chance to state his case this weekend. Underclassmen lead the way here, with Hayes' 2017 teammate Joshua Ross already holding three Big Five conference offers, and Farmington (Mich.) 2016 David Reese picking up his first offers in the last couple weeks. Western Michigan commits Junior McMullen and Paul Engram headline the 2015 prospects expected.
DEFENSIVE BACK
Dior Johnson was defensive back MVP at the Detroit Rivals Camp.
Three-star Detroit-area prospects Dior Johnson, John Kelly and Ray Buford have each performed, and fared well, at this event in the past. Many college coaches will be especially keen on watching Johnson, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound safety who took home position MVP honors at the Detroit Rivals Camp in April but has yet to generate widespread offers. Canada will be well represented by 2017 cornerback Jonathan Sutherland and 2016 cornerback Patrice Rene, both of whom have already generated Big Five conference offers.
