RCS Houston: What to watch for

MORE: Rivals100 | Rivals250 | RCS Headquarters

Houston produces some of the top football talent in the country and is known as a hotbed for future professionals. The Rivals Camp Series presented by Under Armour stops in Houston on Sunday and there will definitely be some gifted athletes ready to show they have what it takes to succeed on the next level and beyond.

More than 200 prospects will take to the fields at Westfield High School with eight Rivals250 prospects planning to participate as well as several talented underclassmen. The expectations are high and there will be plenty of action to watch.

Dominant defensive backs

Missouri City (Texas) Fort Bend Marshall Rivals100 cornerback Kendall Sheffield participated in the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge last summer and has picked up offers from just about every college with a football program. Sheffield has proven to be one of the top cornerbacks in the country and is gearing up to show why on Sunday.

Joining Sheffield at cornerback is TCU commitment P.J. Mbanasor. The Pflugerville (Texas) Hendrickson standout has exploded onto the scene since committing to the Horned Frogs. He may not be as highly touted at this point he has a chance to vault up the rankings with a strong performance.

Then there is Texas commitment Jalen Campbell, who missed all of the 2013 season with a knee injury. The four-star earned defensive skill MVP honors at last year's Houston camp and now he returns to defend his title. He will also be in Dallas.

Alabama Rivals100 safety commitment Deionte Thompson plans to work double duty by putting in some time at receiver on Sunday and he has shown in the past he has the goods at both positions.

Sunday will also be a big day for guys like James Locke, Holton Hill, Kenneth McGruder, Roney Elam and Keivon Ramsey who all have very impressive resumes of their own.

Wide receivers will hold their own

The defensive backs will get plenty of attention, and rightfully so, but the wide receiver group is going to provide plenty of challenges. Houston (Texas) Cypress Ridge Rivals250 talent Kemah Siverand is a big, smooth pass catcher who knows how to stretch the field. Lufkin's Keke Coutee brings plenty of quickness to the table. Justin Gamble just gets open. John Humphrey is explosive and quick. Terry Mark and Sam Mays bring the size and athleticism. This is a well rounded group that is sure to test those top flight defensive backs and make things a lot easier for the quarterbacks.

Youth will be served

There are plenty of talented 2015 prospects but do not overlook the underclassmen. There are some very strong talents to be seen. Nacogdoches (Texas) 2016 defensive back Brandon Jones and Spring (Texas) Westfield 2016 defensive tackle Ed Oliver are two of the most well known but there are more who are already making noise.

The running back position in particular has a few underclassmen to keep an eye on. Port Arthur (Texas) Memorial 2016 Kameron Martin recently picked up offers 10 and 11. Beaumont (Texas) Central 2016 Devwah Whaley already has a couple of offers in his pocket. Richmond (Texas) George Ranch 2016 Darius Anderson is definitely one to watch after earning district sophomore of the year honors.

The quarterbacks and receivers will also be well represented in the 2016 class. Manvel (Texas) signal caller D'Eriq King will be joined by Channelview (Texas) standout Jalen Hurts and West Orange-Stark's Dillon Sterling-Cole. They will be throwing to the likes of Reggie Hemphill and Courtney Lark.

Oliver headlines a group of underclassmen defensive linemen which also includes 2016s Bravvion Roy, Darius Anderson and Isaiah Chambers. Joining the defensive line group are standouts like 2016 linebacker Dontavious Jackson and safety Deontay Anderson.

Plenty of running backs

Underclassmen Martin, Whaley and Anderson were mentioned above, but the 2015 class is bringing plenty of star power as well. Houston (Texas) Episcopal Rivals250 standout Tyreik Gray already holds offers from some of the nation's top programs and averaged over 11 yards a carry as a junior. Texas A&M Rivals250 commitment Jay Bradford is also ready to show off his rare combination of size and speed that made him such a highly coveted prospect before committing to the Aggies.

Plenty of others are also attracting attention. Houston (Texas) Lamar's Ronnie Wesley, Richmond (Texas) George Ranch's Xavian Marks and Humble (Texas) Summer Creek's DeUnte Chatman each bring a wide array of skills to the table. Port Arthur (Texas) Memorial standout and Texas Tech commitment Corey Dauphine is also looking forward to the opportunity to step into the spotlight.

Of course, the running backs will have their obstacles with linebackers like Rivals250 standout Cameron Townsend and College Station (Texas) A&M Consolidated linebacker Riley Garner trying to stop them

Defensive in the trenches

The talent on the defensive side of the trenches is looking pretty stacked. Not only are their strong underclassmen in attendance but there is also a stout group of upperclassmen on hand. Oklahoma commitment Du'Vonta Lampkin brings a nice blend of size and athleticism. Houston (Texas) Cy-Fair defensive tackle Ross Donelly has been a multi-year starter for the Bobcats and is attracting plenty of interest of his own. Conroe (Texas) Oak Ridge standout John Williams is also an intriguing prospect with offers already in-hand. The offensive counterparts will provide a solid test with the likes of Cordel Iwuagwu, Tyler Higby and Josh Jones in attendance.
