Post Game Notes
*Bulldog Retain Governor's Cup Trophy With Epic Comeback: Today's 20-point comeback was the largest in the Mark Richt era and third biggest in school history since falling behind a record 25-0 against #19 Purdue in the 2000 Outback Bowl in Tampa. Georgia rallied for a 28-25 overtime win against the Boilermakers. Georgia did not have a lead today until the second overtime. Georgia trailed 20-0 with 6:33 left in the 2nd quarter today.
Before today, the largest deficit erased in a win under Richt came in the 2006 Chick-fil-A Bowl when it fell behind by 18 (21-3) at halftime to #14 Virginia Tech. The Bulldogs eventually posted a 31-24 win. Today marked the second time this year that Georgia erased a 20-point deficit this season (@ #7 Auburn) but today the Bulldogs won. Also of note, in 1978, Georgia trailed Tech 20-0 in Athens in the 2nd quarter and came back to post a 29-28 decision. With today's win, Georgia improves to 8-4 and awaits its bowl destination.
*Another Overtime Win: With today's 41-34 win, the Bulldogs are now 6-4 in overtime games and have beaten Tech five straight and 12 of the past 13 meetings. Coach Richt is 12-1 against Tech. Earlier this year, Georgia posted a 34-31 win in OT at Tennessee. The only OT game in this series came in 1999, Tech posted a 51-48 win here. Today, Georgia fell behind 34-27 and sophomore Todd Gurley tied it in the first OT, accounting for all 25 yards rushing. In the second OT, Gurley scampered in for 25 yards on the first play for the first Bulldog lead at 41-34. Gurley finished with 122 yards on 20 carries and tied his career high with 3 TDs. Also, he caught four passes for 36 yards with 1 TD.
*Mason Makes First Start A Memorable One: Junior Hutson Mason got his first career start at quarterback after senior Aaron Murray sustained an ACL injury last week in the win over Kentucky. Mason finished with a career-high 22-for-36 for 299 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. His favorite target was junior Chris Conley, who finished the first half alone with four catches for 70 yards (17.5 average). Conley finished with 129 yards on a career-high seven catche. It was his fourth career 100-yard game.
Mason hit sophomore TB Todd Gurley for a 9-yard score to put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard. Gurley now has five receiving touchdowns, which is tied for the team lead with senior FLK Rantavious Wooten and senior TE Arthur Lynch. Mason also had a 9-yard touchdown pass to junior SE Michael Bennett. Mason's start broke Murray's streak of 52 career starts, which was the longest active streak in the NCAA. Senior OT Kenarious Gates now has the team's longest active streak at 32 (38 in his career).
*Sluggish Start For Offense And Then Erases 20-Point Deficit To Win In Overtime: The Bulldogs struggled in the first half, tallying 152 yards on 28 plays. However, 86 yards and Georgia's only touchdown came on the Bulldogs' final drive. Led by junior QB Hutson Mason, Georgia scored on seven plays in 1:09 to cut the deficit to 20-7. The Bulldogs came out in the third quarter and scored on their first two possessions (field goal, touchdown) to trim the lead to 20-17. Georgia tied the game with 4:17 remaining in the contest on a 32-yard field goal by Marshall Morgan. The Bulldogs allowed two sacks in the first half, which equals how many Georgia has surrendered in the last three games combined. For the game, Georgia allowed a season-high five sacks.
*Points Off Turnovers: The Bulldogs are minus-six in turnover margin. Georgia has scored 48 points off 14 turnovers while opponents have tallied 52 points off 20 Bulldog miscues. Mason threw his second interception of the year in the first quarter in Georgia territory. The Yellow Jackets scored a touchdown less than a minute later. Georgia intercepted one of its own on the last play of the first half. It was freshman FS Quincy Mauger's first of his career and fifth for the defense this season. With 5:43 left in the game, sophomore Josh Harvey-Clemons notched his first career interception and returned it 18 yards tot the Tech 25. It led to a game-tying field goal at 27-all with 4:17 left.
Tackle Leaders: Junior Amarlo Herrera had 12 stops including 10 solo while junior Ramik Wilson had nine tackles to lead the Bulldogs. Wilson came in as the SEC leader and now has 128 for the year.
*Starters: Sophomore CB Sheldon Dawson got the first start of his career. This is the seventh different lineup the Bulldogs have had starting in the defensive backfield. Senior CB Damian Swann is the only player who has started all 12 games there. Both freshman FS Tray Matthews and freshman CB Shaq Wiggins, who are regular starters, did not play.
*Captains: Today's game captains were junior ILB Kosta Vavlas, senior DE Garrison Smith, senior FB Corey Campbell and junior C David Andrews.
*Injury Report: Senior DE Garrison Smith left the game in the third quarter with a left ankle injury and did not return. Corey Campbell sustained a concussion in the opening quarter and was out for the game.
