Dawgs honored for academics

The Georgia football program found itself in elite company Tuesday with the announcement that the Bulldogs, Stanford, Tulane and Rice will share the American Football Coaches Association's 2013 Academic Achievement Award, sponsored by the Touchdown Club of Memphis.

"That's really great news," Richt said. "We're pretty excited about that."

Richt had ever right to be.

The four schools recorded a 100 percent graduation rate for members of its 2006 football freshman class, which is what determines the award. It's the first time that Georgia and Tulane have honored with the award, which will be presented at the President's Kickoff Luncheon on Monday, January 13 at the 2014 AFCA Convention in Indianapolis.

It's the sixth time that the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR) has been used to select the winners.

Forty-six other institutions will be recognized for graduating 75 percent or
more of their football student-athletes. Twelve of those institutions - Army, Boston College, Duke, East Carolina, Louisiana Tech, Nebraska, Northwestern, South Florida, TCU, UCLA, Virginia Tech and Washington - achieved a rate of 90 percent or better.

The Academic Achievement Award was established by the College Football Association in 1981.

The GSR is based on a six-year graduation window for student-athletes which is a change from the five-year window used by the CFA and AFCA. The GSR was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately assess the academic success
of student-athletes.
