Enwere on Cal's 1-7 start, his team's 1-5 one

The Cal football team is averaging just 109.5 rushing yards per game through eight games, good for 110th in the country.

No Bears running back has topped the 100-yard mark in a single game, while their leading rusher -- Daniel Lasco -- is averaging just 42.6 yards per game and has started just once this season.

Probably not a bad recruiting cycle to add a Texas high school's single-season all-purpose yardage leader.

California running back commit Vic Enwere became just such for Fort Bend Austin this past week and -- in the process -- the first-ever Bulldog to top 1,500 all-purpose yards in a single season. Crazier still? He's still got two district games to play, plus a potential trip to the playoffs.

"It's a great feeling, I'm not really doting on it too much -- we've still got games going on, games to win, playoffs to make, but it is a great feeling, just knowing I've got it."

"It's a great feeling knowing I got better."

Even more so knowing it helped turn around the season for Fort Bend Austin.

The 'Dogs started the year 1-5 before reeling off back-to-back wins -- both with Enwere getting reps at wildcat QB -- to put them at 3-2 in District and in position for a postseason berth.

"It was always the little things, games we lost by three points, small margins, and it was always the small things," Enwere said. "We've made some big strides, I'm very proud of the way we've bounced back."

Enwere is hoping the Bears do the same.

"From the beginning of the season, we were experiencing the same things as they are. We went through it, missing players, this and that," Enwere said. "It's hard to read too much into all of it -- the staff just got there, they have one the hardest schedules..."

"Right now I'm still sticking with them. I know things are down, other people are still recruiting me, I'm talking to some coaches here and there, but I speak to (the Cal staff) every week. I was really excited about committing to them, and they've been loyal to me."

Enwere intends to do the same for now, with a postseason official visit now looming large.

"Right now, all I have is a trip to Cal planned -- there's nothing set in stone with dates or anything but it's the first place I'm going. I'll see how the visit goes, if it's 100% solid, I won't check anything else out."

As of now, Cal's 1-7 start hasn't had a hugely adverse affect on the commitment of the Missouri City, Texas native -- and he hasn't allowed other coaches to make it one.

"Coaches that say things like that, I'm no longer pay attention to them in recruiting," he said. "Every last one of them has been in that situation."

And every last one of them probably could've used a Texas record book-rewriter in the fold come signing day...
