USC Fitts Perfectly
While the evaluation period is just beginning for college coaches, it ended for Redlands (Calif.) junior defensive end Kylie Fitts Saturday.
After wanting to spend the month of May to evaluate his 24 scholarship offers, Fitts decided to end the recruiting process at the USC spring game.
"I give all glory to God, and today, I committed to the University of Southern California," said Fitts. "I kind of knew for a while I wanted to go there, but it was just a matter of how I was going to say it.
"I planned on setting up an unofficial visit next month and committing then. I came down to USC this morning and Coach [James] Cregg gave me a tour of the new facilities. Then I talked with Pat Haden and really enjoyed my time with him.
"Then I watched the spring game and really enjoyed that. Afterward, Coach [Ed] Orgeron came over and asked me how I liked the game. I told him I loved it, and that I loved my visit.
"He asked me, 'So, do you want to be a Trojan?' That's when I told them that I wanted to commit to USC. The coaches gave me hugs and congratulated me. It was a great moment."
Fitts, who grew up a Trojan fan, was admittedly frustrated by not getting a scholarship after the Trojans junior day in February. However, after receiving that coveted offer last month, Fitts was all smiles when he unofficially visited USC two weeks ago.
"It's my dream school and I grew up watching them," said Fitts. "I always wanted to play for them, and now that i have the chance, it's just amazing. Everything I saw and felt today, it was a dream come true for me."
The Trojans secure commit No. 4 for the 2013 class. While the potential for recruiting drama always exists, Fitts will have to squeeze any further trips to other schools in with a hectic class schedule.
"I talked to Coach Cregg about visits, and I told him that I was strongly committed to USC," said Fitts. "But for the life experience, I wanted to take some visits to out of state schools just to see something different.
"He was cool with that, just as long as I made USC my last official visit."
Fitts will take summer school classes and additional classes next fall to graduate from East Valley High School in December.
"That was another reason why I wanted to commit early," said Fitts. "I really need to focus in on my senior year and get this stuff out of the way."
