Nibbles from FB Practice

This is the final week of Spring Football and many younger Bearcats are finding playing time.

Position Battles

Returning punts right now are Danny Milligan, Kenbrell Thompkins, Chris Burrell, and Shaquille Washington.

Don't expect to see any Jameel Poteat or George Winn back there. A sprinkling of Ralph David Abernathy might be added to the mix.

Anthony McClung hovers near the group and might get some work in when he fully recovers from injury. So far no defensive backs have been shuffled in.

Even though Jameel Poteat was expecting (and expected) to start in 2012 George Winn is winning the job. Coach Jones suggested that Poteat and Abernathy could steal some playing time but Winn is the featured back.

Thundercats Roar

Not sure how Walter Stewart stumbled upon 1980's cartoon Thundercats but he now leads the defense in a gutteral roar before big plays. Thundercats! he yells and his teammates vociferously reply.

Outside linebacker Nick Temple applied the loudest tackle of the day. Typically lined up as a third linebacker Temple stuffed a central run with a loud plastic snap. Number 95 Josh Posley bumped him as he came off the field. The former Warren Central High School teammates still look out for each other.

Still Defensive Player of the Day belongs to Maalik Bomar. In a 45-second span Maalik forced a fumble, recovered the fumble, dashed 75 yards for a touchdown, and sacked Munchie Legaux.

Late in practice Head Coach Butch Jones beckoned Silverberry Mouhon from the masses. It was Silver's chance to see first team reps. Coming off a Defensive Scout Team Player of the Year honor Mouhon is trying to snag a few plays at DE.

Another lineman previously unfamiliar to the first team was Adam Dempsey. Today the Highlands graduate played often inside.

The entire defense is now led vocally by Dan Giordano.

Injuries have forced three DB starters to the sideline. Who are their replacements? Are the fresh faces competing? Is Coach Jones pleased with depth?

BearcatReport.com will feature one unstable unit, the defensive backs, later this afternoon.
