Interesting stats: When 548 isn't enough

Each week during the season, we look at some statistics involving individuals and/or teams that we find intriguing. Here is this week's version:

Western Michigan QB Alex Carder threw for 548 yards in a loss to Toledo last week; that's the highest single-game performance this season and the sixth 500-yard game of the season. Carder is the only quarterback to throw for 500 and lose this season.

Carder's performance was one of five 400-yard games last weekend; he was joined in reaching that plateau by Washington State's Connor Halliday (494 yards), TCU's Casey Pachall (473), Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden (423) and UAB's Jonathan Perry (410). There have been 48 400-yard games this season, which is 10 more than in all of last season. This season also surpasses the totals from 2008 and '09 (46 both seasons). But there were 69 such performances in 2007.

This probably surprises no one: Alabama has forced 73 punts, the most in the nation. The team that has forced the second-most punts is from Louisiana - but it's not LSU. Instead, it's Louisiana Tech, which has forced 71.

Our weekly update on Houston QB Case Keenum: He had 22 completions in last week's rout of Tulane. That gives him 1,397 for his career. Former Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell holds the current NCAA record with 1,403. Keenum already holds the NCAA career marks for total offense, TD passes and passing yards.

N.C. State sophomore CB David Amerson leads the nation with 10 interceptions. He's just the second FBS player with double-digit picks since Miami's Sean Taylor and Nebraska's Josh Bullocks had 10 each in 2003. UCLA's Rahim Moore in 2009 is the only other FBS player to reach double-digit interceptions in a season since '03. The single-season record is 14 by Washington's Al Worley in 1968.

This also should surprise no one: Big 12 quarterbacks, on the whole, have the nation's best passing efficiency numbers as a group. The worst belong to Sun Belt quarterbacks, with the SEC's next-worst.

Seventy-nine teams are averaging at least 25 points per game. How many teams averaged at least 25 points per game last season? Try 79.

Florida International WR T.Y. Hilton returned a punt 97 yards for a TD last week in a rout of Florida Atlantic; it's the longest punt return of the season. Houston had two punt returns of at least 70 yards for scores in its rout of Tulane, a 76-yard return by Damian Payne and a 70-yard return by Patrick Edwards. It's the third time this season there were three 70-yard-plus punt returns in one weekend; the most happened Sept. 24, when there were four returns of 80-plus-yards for scores.
