Power Rankings: Hosley 'picks' up his game

Coaches Power Rankings: Head Coach | Off. Coordinator | Def. Coordinator

After leading the nation with nine interceptions last season, Virginia Tech cornerback Jayron Hosley didn't pick off any passes in his first two games this season.

At least not any that counted. Hosley's interception in a 17-10 triumph over East Carolina was nullified by his own pass interference penalty.

Hosley spent Game 3 making amends.

Hosley had two interceptions Saturday in a 26-7 victory over Arkansas State. That effort helped Hosley regain his status as the nation's No. 1 defensive back in the Rivals.com College Football Power Rankings, which measure the nation's top performers at each position.

"We wanted to get back to that dominant defense," Hosley told reporters afterward."[Defensive coordinator Bud Foster] has been preaching about it. The first half, we've been kind of shaky to start. This year, we plan on coming out hard, fighting hard, running the game all four quarters. That's what we need to get back to. The defense fought hard; the front four really came up big for us with three sacks. And on the back end, we held those guys down."

Hosley regained the top spot from Alabama strong safety Mark Barron, who made seven tackles in a 41-0 shutout of North Texas.

Nebraska's Jared Crick and Georgia's Orson Charles joined Hosley in moving back to the top of the power rankings at their positions after a one-week absence.

Crick had six tackles and a sack in a 51-38 victory over Washington to take over the No. 1 spot in the defensive line rankings from Boise State's Billy Winn, who made three tackles in a 40-15 triumph over Toledo.

Charles caught two passes for 42 yards and a touchdown in a 59-0 rout of Coastal Carolina. He regained the top spot in the tight end rankings from Stanford's Coby Fleener, who missed most of a 37-10 victory over Arizona with concussion-like symptoms.

The other change at the top of the power rankings comes at defensive coordinator, as LSU's John Chavis moves to the No. 1 spot. LSU hasn't allowed a touchdown in either of its past two games and yielded just 52 rushing yards on 34 carries Thursday in a 19-6 victory over Mississippi State.

Chavis moved ahead of Virginia Tech's Foster. Although Foster's defense also performed quite well last week, the Hokies were facing an Arkansas State team that isn't as potent as Mississippi State.

Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore, Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon, Boise State offensive tackle Nate Potter, Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly, West Virginia kick returner Tavon Austin, Alabama coach Nick Saban and Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn remained atop their respective positions.

The rankings put a special emphasis on recent performances while also taking career achievements into consideration. Our coordinator rankings exclude coordinators who don't call their own plays or signals.
