Shell released from hospital
3:45 update from USC:
Freshman offensive tackle Brandon Shell is doing fine this afternoon, according to head football trainer Clint Haggard. Shell, a 6-6, 316-pounder from Goose Creek, suffered from heat-related illness following Saturday's practice. He was treated by the Gamecock medical staff at the practice fields, and was transported to a local hospital, but has since been released. He was back at the stadium attending meetings with the team this afternoon, according to Haggard, and will be re-evaluated periodically.
2:35 update from from Chris Clark:
It's my understanding that Shell is still at the hospital having normal tests run, but he is expected to be fine and to be released later.
Original report by David Cloninger:
Freshman offensive lineman Brandon Shell suffered a heat-related ailment after Saturday's practice and was transported by ambulance to a hospital.
"Had one player have a little heat problem," coach Steve Spurrier said as he drove off the practice field, after the ambulance departed. "We think he's going to be OK."
Shell, who has been limited in early camp due to recovering from offseason labrum surgery, participated in about 10-12 snaps on Friday and about the same number on Saturday. He didn't seem to be holding anything back.
After practice, Shell had to be helped into the first-aid tent bordering the practice field, where he was given IVs. Shell seemed alert and responsive as he was loaded into the ambulance.
