Sims looks at safety

Brookhaven (Miss.) rising senior Greg Sims was often found on Friday nights making big plays in the secondary as well as in the return game. THe 5-foot-11 and 180-pound defensive back had over 50 tackles last year with four interceptions, and also saw some time on offense and had a touchdown via kickoff returns.

Looking ahead to this summer, Sims will shift his attention to learning another secondary spot.

"I mainly played cornerback last year," said Sims. "But this spring the coaches had me working at a different spot and I was moved to free safety. It was different at first and I know I have to work hard to get better with this change. The coaches were telling me to work on my backpedaling more and I am going to work on that all summer."

And watching his secondary move were several Division 1 programs, said Sims.

"I saw a few schools come by like Southern Miss, Memphis, Mississippi State, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette and Nicholls State," said Sims. "Memphis has offered me and so has Jackson State and then I am getting pretty good interest from Mississippi State."

Concerning the Bulldogs, Sims noted that have also inquired about his talents in another sport.

"Mississippi State has talked to me about football and track, too," said Sims. "They are the only school that has mentioned both sports. I ran the 100 and 200 meters this year and I also do the long jump and high jump. I went to state in both of the jumping events, too."

With spring ball and track now concluded, Sims said he was turning his attention to a summer camp tour.

"I have been thinking about which camps to go to this summer but I haven't made all those decisions yet," said Sims. "I am looking at a lot of them that I have been invited to like Tennessee, Mississippi State, Southern Miss and Memphis."

Sims also added that a pair of schools have caught his early attention in his college recruitment.

"I kinda like Mississippi State and Memphis," noted Sims. "The Memphis coaches are pretty cool and so are the Mississippi State coaches. I would like to be a Bulldog and they told me I had a good opportunity to play for them and an opportunity to do well at summer camp."
