More honors for Johnson

For the second consecutive week, Tulsa's Damaris Johnson was selected as the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week. In the Hurricane's 64-27 victory over Rice on Saturday, Johnson totaled 322 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns.

Johnson did it in a variety of ways. He gained three punt return yards, 22 rushing yards, 134 kickoff return yards and 163 receiving yards.

"He doesn't ever say anything about personal accolades," said Tulsa head coach Todd Graham. "He just shrugs his shoulders, and goes on about his business. He doesn't usually say much. He's a real quiet, shy kid.

"I don't think he likes being singled out, but he has really matured during his time here. I know it means a lot to him, but he'll be the first to give credit to his teammates. He needs to have another big week for us against Houston."

This is also the second week in a row that Johnson has been recognized on the list of "Paul Hornung's Most Versatile Performances of the Week" by the Louisville Sports Commission. He is on the Watch List for the inaugural Paul Hornung Award that recognizes the most versatile player in major college football.

The 5-foot, 8-inch Johnson also became the Conference USA record-holder for career kickoff return yards with 3,054 yards and needs only 64 yards to become the NCAA's all-time kick-off return leader.

Johnson came into the game ranked 19th on the NCAA's career all-purpose yardage list and jumped all the way into 10th place with 6,824.

The junior wide receiver scored on pass receptions of 12 and 41 yards and had his second career kickoff return for a TD with a 94-yarder in the third quarter to put Tulsa ahead 50-13.

It's the second award this year for Johnson and the sixth C-USA Special Teams Player of the Week honor in his three-year career.
