Edwards talks Tech's evolving D
Al Groh. With a huge game coming up Saturday against Groh's former team, Virginia, starting safety, Mario Edwards, gave some of his thoughts on the defense this year. The Georgia Tech defense has struggled at times this season in their first year under new defensive coordinator
Edwards compared this year's defensive scheme to last year's by saying, "Last year we simplified the defense and kept it the same week by week this year (there) is more (of a) gameplan team by team." He mentioned that there are some new aspects to this year's defense, and that they would "surprise a lot of teams."
The Jacket's defense is coming off a solid game against Wake Forest in which they only allowed 268 total yards. Edwards discussed some of the gameplan that they last week by saying that they knew that Wake "would try to run to the perimeter, so we had plays set up to stop the option attack."
"Virginia is more of a power team,' Edwards added, 'so we have different plays set up for them."
The Jackets have struggled against power, between the tackles, running attacks as well as short to mid-range passing attacks this season. Virginia will certainly try to exploit these two aspects on Saturday, but Edwards expressed confidence that the Jackets will only get better defensively.
"It's been a week by week process, but we're getting better, and game by game you should see some improvement."
Let us hope Edwards is correct, and that he and the Jackets will be able to stand tall this homecoming Saturday.
