Power rankings: Peterson corners the market

Power Rankings: QB | RB | WR | TE | OL | DL | LB | DB | ST
Head coach | Offensive coach | Defensive coach

LSU has a star-studded receiving unit that features plenty of future NFL talent, but the player who made the most spectacular catches at Tiger Stadium this past weekend wasn't a wide receiver.

The guy making the highlight-worthy plays was LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson, who picked off two passes in the Tigers' 29-7 victory over Mississippi State. The performance made Peterson the new No. 1 cornerback in the Rivals.com College Football Power Rankings, which measure the nation's top performers at each position.

"When he's on the field, [he] just multiplies your opportunities at defending and getting turnovers," LSU coach Les Miles said. "There's just a little more excitement on that side of the field."

Peterson moved ahead of Ohio State's Chimdi Chekwa, who recorded two solo tackles Saturday in a 43-7 rout of Ohio. Peterson now tops the power rankings at two positions; he already led the special teams rankings based on his skills as a kickoff and punt returner.

There were no other changes atop the power rankings this week.

Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, Kansas State running back Daniel Thomas, Oklahoma wide receiver Ryan Broyles, Notre Dame tight end Kyle Rudolph, Wisconsin offensive tackle Gabe Carimi, Purdue defensive end Ryan Kerrigan, Michigan State linebacker Greg Jones, Alabama coach Nick Saban, Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson and TCU defensive coordinator Dick Bumpas remained atop their respective positions.

The power rankings measure overall career performances as well as a player or coach's most recent results. The rating of a player and coach can fluctuate each week during the season depending on how he fared the previous week. Our coordinator rankings exclude coordinators who don't call their own plays or signals.
