Preseason unit rankings: Secondary

Here is part six of our national unit rankings.

We are unveiling one unit per day and will end Thursday with overall coaching staffs.

The rankings take into account what the players have accomplished, how we think the players will do this season and sheer talent. But production does trump potential.

Here are the secondary rankings. Next up: special teams.

SECONDARY UNIT RANKINGS

1. NORTH CAROLINA
BUZZ
: CB Kendric Burney and FS Deunta Williams each earned first-team All-ACC honors last season. All four starters return for the Tar Heels, but more consistency is needed.

2. IOWA
BUZZ
: This unit is led by SS Tyler Sash, who will be paired with Brett Greenwood to give Iowa one of the top safety duos in the nation. Keep an eye on the cornerback slot opposite Shaun Prater.

3. TEXAS
BUZZ
: Elite CB Aaron Williams and two other starters are back from a top-20 pass defense.

4. WEST VIRGINIA
BUZZ
: Brandon Hogan is the Big East's best cover corner, and FS Robert Sands could be the best playmaker in the secondary. S Sidney Glover is a two-year starter and a big hitter in WVU's 3-3-5 scheme.

5. TCU
BUZZ
: The Frogs, who run a 4-2-5 set, return their two starting safeties from last season and have plenty of confidence that Greg McCoy and Jason Teague can fit in seamlessly as first-year starters at cornerback.

6. FLORIDA
BUZZ
: The Gators lost a first-round pick (CB Joe Haden) and a third-rounder (FS Major Wright). But it should be a speedier unit this season, and the safety tandem of Will Hill (free) and Ahmad Black (strong) should be the best in the nation.

7. UCLA
BUZZ
: The Bruins grabbed 20 interceptions in '09, and FS Rahim Moore had half of them. SS Tony Dye also has all-league potential.

8. OREGON
BUZZ
: Thanks to guys such as John Boyett, Eddie Pleasant and Marvin Johnson, no team anywhere is deeper at safety. The Ducks had some growing pains in the secondary last season, which means this is a deep unit this season.

9. CLEMSON
BUZZ
: SS DeAndre McDaniel is a legitimate Thorpe Award candidate. The Tigers are hoping Marcus Gilchrist makes a successful move from free safety to cornerback.

10. NEBRASKA
BUZZ
: CBs Prince Amukamara and Alfonzo Dennard have pro potential. Both safeties will be new starters.

11. SOUTH CAROLINA
BUZZ
: Sophomore CB Stephon Gilmore is a star on the rise, and senior Chris Culliver has moved from free safety to his more natural position of corner. Sophomore SS DeVonte Holloman must play well.

12. OKLAHOMA
BUZZ
: The safeties are strong, especially FS Quinton Carter, but there are two new starters at corner.

Don't overlook these 5: Air Force, Boise State, LSU, Miami, Penn State
