Freshman player decides to leave program

Dexter Morant has left the Georgia football team, the freshman outside linebacker confirmed to UGASports Wednesday afternoon.

"No sir," said Morant, when asked if he was still a part of the Bulldog football program.

In the brief conversation, Morant said that he plans to transfer to another school. If he attempts to transfer to another Football Bowl Subdivision Team, he will have to sit out a year due to the NCAA's transfer rule.

According to a team source who wished to remain anonymous, Bulldog players tried to talk Morant out of leaving, but to not avail. "Football just wasn't for him," the source said.

Morant almost left the team in June after reporting for summer workouts. He was thought to be homesick at the time. After meeting with Coach Garner he decided to stay but now has left the program.

A 6-foot-7, 240-pound native of Manning, S.C., Morant was a four-star prospect according to Rivals.com, the 9th-rated prospect from the state of South Carolina and the nation's 15th-ranked defensive end. He originally chose the Bulldogs over Alabama and Clemson.

As a senior, Morant recorded 80 tackles, including 25 for a loss and nine sacks.
