No. 8 Mater Dei outlasts No. 17 Gorman

MORE: Check out the latest RivalsHigh Top 100 boys basketball rankings

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei, apparently out to prove it can run with anyone with its nearly all-guard lineup, did it again Saturday night, outlasting Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman, 82-76, in the marquee game of the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei.

Mater Dei, No. 8 in the latest RivalsHigh top 100 boys basketball rankings, showed why as it had four players in double-figures, led by 26 from UCLA commit Tyler Lamb.

No. 17 Bishop Gorman got 29 points from promising 6-5 sophomore forward Shabazz Muhammad.

Mater Dei's balanced scoring was the difference as Keala King added 21, Gary Franklin had 17 and Max Hooper scored 14.

"We knew they were going to give us a run for our money," King told Damian Calhoun of The Orange County Register (read its game story here). "We knew they were going to come out and play us as hard as they can.

"We came in here and tried to demonstrate to everybody that we're a great team also."

Mater Dei (22-1) was just happy to be playing a great team. It has had few tough games this season.

"Right now, in league play, the games haven't been too close," Mater Dei head coach Gary McKnight told the paper. "I think we really needed this for the playoffs and it was very important."

Not too close was the story of this tournament.

No. 14 Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick outclassed No. 46 Woodland Hills (Calif.) Taft, 91-64, behind 24 from Kyrie Irving and 22 from Mike Gilchrist in the final game of the tourney. Earlier in the day, No. 78 Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler was too much for Los Angeles (Calif.) Fairfax, 79-51.

The other big game in the country Saturday night was cancelled as the heavy snow in the Midwest prevented No. 2 Columbus (Ohio) Northland from traveling to Michigan to play No. 24 Beverly Hills (Mich.) Country Day. The hope is to reschedule the game for Feb. 13.
