Akuna makes the call

While there weren't a ton of surprises for Oregon State coaches and fans on Wednesday, good news did hit the wire this morning as Hawaii's top prospect, linebacker Shaydon Akuna from Kapolei announced that he would be signing with the Beavers.

"It's the place I feel comfortable," Akuna said. "It's the best fit for me. I have a really good relationship with the coaches and I like that they have other Hawaii players on the roster. That just makes it feel more like home."

Akuna's recruitment has been a roller coaster ride with big time programs from across the US getting involved. His childhood favorite Florida State Seminoles were in it until the end.

According to Greg Ladky from Rivals.com, who has seen Akuna in-person several times, Akuna has no ceiling to his potential on the gridiron.

"I think of all the players in Hawaii he has the best combo of size and athleticism," Ladky said this morning. "He is a legit 6'2"-6'3" and he is a real rangy kid and is quick twitch. He has a lot of natural strength and I think the sky is the limit for him."

The Beavers are known for utilizing aggressive, fast hard-hitting linebackers, and Akuna fits the bill.

"They (Oregon State) are getting a kid that runs hard, plays real aggressive, and runs to the football," Akuna said when asked about what type of player the Beavers are landing.

With that it was time for Akuna to take the stage at the Sheraton Waikiki as he and roughly 60 other student-athletes from Hawaii signed their LOI's in front of family and friends.

BeaverBlitz will catch up and have more from Akuna as Signing Day 2010 begins to wrap-up.
