Brandeis rolls over Pflugerville
SAN ANTONIO- Noah Copeland and the San Antonio Brandeis (11-1) offense rolled up 51 points on a Pflugerville (7-5) defense that allowed only three points just last week, as the Broncos move on to the third round of the playoffs in their magical second year as a program with a score of 51-37.
The Broncos came into the game averaging 32.5 points per game, but Coach John Campbell and his Broncos did not expect to have this much offensive success.
"To be honest, we didn't really do anything differently," Coach John Campbell said. "We just came out and played our game."
The Bronco success can be attributed to Copeland's 318 yard, 6 touchdown career performance, along with a stellar game from the men in the trenches who gave him gaping holes all game long.
Copeland scored the game's first touchdown on a run from 5 yards out, and the teams traded touchdowns for the rest of the half until time ran out on Pflugerville, as they were forced to kick a Sean Ianno 41 yard field goal which left the score at 29-23.
Copeland had scored twice more in the half, from 69 and 25 yards respectively. The other first half score for Brandeis came on an 18 yard Michael Barrientos pass to John Jackson on 2nd and 15.
Alex Dean, Pflugerville quarterback, threw for all five of his team's touchdowns on the afternoon, three of which came in the first half. Dean also had a great completion to touchdown ratio, as he only threw eight completions the entire game. His first half touchdowns went to Drew Travis, Julian Ward and Jordan Moon.
After holding Pflugerville to just a field goal to end the half, Brandeis took the ball to start the half and looked to be moving toward a score to open up a two score lead, but penalties dug them into a 3rd a 19 hole that they could not climb out of. Pflugerville responded with an 80 yard drive and took their first and only lead of the game 30-29 on a 25 yard touchdown pass from Dean to Sammy Flowers.
Brandeis would go on to outscore the Panthers 22-7 for the remainder of the game thanks to three more Copeland touchdowns of 3, 1 and 66 yards. Copeland's last touchdown came seconds after Drew Travis hauled in his second touchdown pass of the game with just under four minutes left to bring the game to within ten points.
Brandeis (11-1) will meet Edinburg North (9-3) in the regional semifinal round next Saturday, at the same time, same place; 4PM at the Alamodome.
