Banks honored by Big 12
Brandon Banks has been named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week after his stellar performance against Oklahoma, the conference office has announced.For the third time this season, Kansas State kick returner
The accolade is the fourth of Banks' career and marked the first time since Josh Scobey in 2001 that a Wildcat has been honored by the league office three times in a season. Also, K-State players have been awarded weekly honors from the Big 12 a total of five times this season, which are the second-most among all Big 12 schools (Texas - 6).
Banks continued his record-setting 2009 campaign on Saturday as the senior recorded his Big 12-record fourth kickoff return for a touchdown this season at No. 22 Oklahoma. The 98-yard return in the fourth quarter pulled the Cats to within 35-30 of the Sooners in a game that saw K-State rally from 22 points down. Banks' four kick returns for scores this season are a school and Big 12 record and one shy of the NCAA single-season record of five.
Also, Banks had 351 all-purpose yards at Oklahoma (156 rec and 195 kr) on Saturday, which tied a school record and tied for fifth in Big 12 single-game history; his 351 all-purpose yards were also the most in the Big 12 and the nation this season, bettering Derrick Locke (Kentucky) by 41 yards (310 vs. Louisville).
Currently, Banks leads the Big 12 in kick return yards (953), kick return average (31.8) and kick return TDs (4), and his current career kick return average of 30.2 yards is first in K-State history and sixth in Big 12 history.
