USC offers electric athlete
USC has stepped up with an offer to one of the Southeast's most athletic prospects in Duncan (SC) Byrnes CB Nick Jones.
The 5-foot-8 Jones, who is capable of playing on offense or defense on the next level, was pumped about his Gamecock offer.
"I was very excited when I was told," he said. "My coach told me during lunch that I needed to make a phone call to the USC coaches and I found out then. Coach (Jay) Graham and Coach (Brad) Lawing were on the phone.
Upstate recruiter Brad Lawing has built a solid relationship with Jones.
"I have a great relationship with Coach Lawing," he told GamecockCentral.com. "I feel like I can talk to him about anything."
A visit to Columbia is a sure thing for the talented prospect, whom the Gamecock coaching staff believes could play a variety of positions.
"Oh yea, I'm going down there," he said. "We just haven't set a date."
Jones talked about another teammate that Carolina is recruiting in Marcus Lattimore.
"We've been joking around about going to the same school," he said. "But I know we are serious. "We are trying to go to school with each other. It would be great."
Jones, who could make an excellent defensive back or slot receiver at the next level, will not delay his decision very long.
"I'm not going to hold out until Signing Day," he said. "I want to decide sometime before my first game."
The three-star prospect has a leader.
"Right now, I would say South Carolina is my number one."
