Gamecocks jump on top for Florida OL

Offensive line is a big priority for South Carolina in the Class of 2010, and the Gamecock coaching staff has extended an offer to one of Florida' most versatile trenchmen in OL Tramell Williams. caught up with Williams in this exclusive update.

Williams found out about his Gamecock offer a short while ago.

"Coach Steve Spurrier, Jr. just called me and let me know about the offer," he said. "I was overwhelmed. I kind of thought I would get the offer, it was in the back of my mind."

The Gamecocks are highly appealing to the 6-foot-2, 260-pounder.

"They liked what they saw on film," he said. "I could definitely see myself going there. I'm going to get up this summer for camp."

South Carolina's legendary head coach has made a strong impression on the lineman, who claims a 305-pound bench press.

"Coach (Steve) Spurrier is one of the all-time great coaches," he said. "He's awesome. What he did with Duke and Florida, I think he can do with South Carolina."

The Gamecocks are the second offer for Williams, joining Vanderbilt. Other schools are also on Williams' radar, however.

"I've been hearing from Miami and Florida State along with Georgia Tech," he said.

Miami was thought to have the inside track for Williams' services, but that has now changed.

"With USC jumping in the picture, it's a 50/50 chance," he said.

Williams, who claims a 4.9 forty-yard dash and a 4.3-second shuttle run, has a few factors he will be looking at when deciding.

"I'm going to be looking at the environment, the direction of the team, and the coaches," he said.

An earlier decision is planned for Williams, who currently plays tackle for Lee.

"I'm thinking about committing before the season starts," he said. "We need the seniors to step up and be leaders and I don't want it to be a distraction."

One team is currently on top for the Sunshine State lineman:

"South Carolina is my leader," he said.
