Camp down to the home stretch
With two practices left of spring camp, the players are beginning show some wear and tear. Jake Dean went down with what appears to be an ankle injury. Unless Dean gets back in a hurry, then the Bruins will run with Ryan Taylor as the number one center for the scrimmage this Saturday.
The good and the bad news is Taylor has only had 13 practices. It is good that he has been able to get that far in only 13 practices and the bad is how much can you really know in 13 practices, when most of them you were at guard.
Taylor has been impressive this spring and obviously is their plans for this fall.
Redshirt freshman corner Aaron Hester made a heck of a play, one of the best of spring in fact, when he went up into the air took the ball out of Dominique Johnson's hands and came down with the ball. Though he came up with the ball out of bounds, he did prevent a touchdown.
It has been plays like Hester's, which show heart and hustle that has differentiates the sides of the ball.
On the recruiting front Long Beach (Calif.) had over 20 players on hand. The Poly contingent was led by head coach Raul Lara, who brought players from classes from 2010 to 2012. They all looked like they were having a good time.
Lakewood high school was also in the house, so the tough Moore League was well represented. NIKE quarterback MVP Jesse Scroggins showed up with his teammate safety/wide receiver Dion Bailey (UCLA offer) and defensive end Justin Utupo.
Also in the house was offensive tackle Erik Kohler from Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian.
The following is Rick Neuheisel's after practice discussion with the media.
Neuheisel: "Good practice, it was the right kind of tempo, but still we are showing the signs now of depletion at some positions that is slowing the progress. I love the way guys are continuing to fight and give us everything they have and it will service us well down the road."
