NJ WR talks first offer and more

Wayne (NJ) De Paul Catholic wide receiver Shakim Phillips has hit the recruiting scene as hard as you can when you are a junior in high school. Phillips is one of 250 players to watch list and holds over five scholarship offers at this time. caught up with the prospect to talk about his weekend and give an update on the first school that offered him on September 1st.

"Syracuse offered me on September first," Phillips said. "I was excited I was happy it was my first offer. I was really excited and happy."

Phillips, 6-foot-2, 191 pounds was supposed to visit the Orange this past weekend, but another football function put and end to those plans.

"No I did not make it because we had a mandatory football practice, well not practice it is speed training. My coach called them up and said that I could not make it down."

Does Phillips plan to make another trip?

"I will make it up in the spring. I will probably go to a spring practice or spring game."

Don't worry Orange fans the gifted receiver prospect has already made a visit to Syracuse in the past.

"I was at the last Syracuse Spring Game. It was good I liked it a lot. I liked the receiver number one I think his last name was Williams."

The Garden State product thought that Mike Williams was done at Syracuse, but recently found out that Williams will be again catching passes in Orange. He talked about the return of Williams briefly, but was very enthusiastic about it.

"Oh he is back! Oh that is good! I liked watching him play."

Besides enjoying the play of Mike Williams Phillips also enjoyed a lot more.

"It was nice I like the football complex at Manley Field House and I just liked everything."

In September when colleges can start offering junior prospects is when Syracuse offered. At that time the Orange still had Greg Robinson running the show. Now it is a little over two months into the Doug Marrone Era at Syracuse, have the coach and prospect talked yet?

"I only talked with him one time, but we were talking about football and academics and everything. He is a good guy and a good coach."

Not only is Syracuse on his list of offers, but six other schools covering the ACC, Big East, Pac 10, and SEC

"I have offers from Syracuse, Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Duke, Arizona, Boston College, and Vanderbilt."

One other school from the Pac 10 could be the next to offer Phillips feels.

"I think Oregon is close to offering."

When it comes to defining himself as a receiver Phillips likes to think of himself as a player that goes out and always gives it his ll.

"I would say that I try and work as much as I can. I try to not take days off and when quarterbacks throw passes I try and catch every ball even if it is high, low, or deep I will go after it."
