After a whirlwind past two weeks that saw him take official visits to Texas A&M and Texas Tech, it looks as if life will return to its normal place for Keller (TX) Fossil Ridge linebacker Brandon Mahoney. The former Oklahoma commit, who re-opened his recruitment several weeks ago, committed to the Red Raiders on Saturday.

"Yes sir, I did [commit]," confirmed Mahoney. "I was really impressed with everything that they had to offer. The coaches seemed really cool.

"Really, I didn't even plan on committing when I came here. I was just checking it out, to see how it was. But I saw an opportunity and I had to take it."

Mahoney first shared the news with head coach Mike Leach.

"He was kind of shocked," laughed Mahoney. "He was like, 'Really? Well, alright, I'm happy for you to be a Red Raider. Welcome to the family!'"

The 6-2, 210-pound linebacker cited academic opportunities and the program's graduation rates as big factors in his decision, as well as the chance to play for defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill.

"Coach Ruff is real cool. Me and him clicked as soon as I got there," said Mahoney. "I didn't know what to expect, I had never met him before. I could tell, though, that he's one of those old school-types that will tell you straight up. He may yell at you, but then he's going to help you, coach you up from there."

Additionally, the opportunity to play with Fossil Ridge teammate Aaron Fisher, who is also committed to the Red Raiders, played a small role.

"He was a little bit of a factor because it's easier for me to transition, me and him are going to be roommates," said Mahoney. "It wasn't that big of a deal but it was an extra incentive."

As for whether or not there is any chance of a surprise on National Signing Day?

"Nah, I'm done. I'm pretty much drained from all of this stuff."
