4-star DE to visit Spartans

Michigan State is looking to put the finishing touches on an outstanding class. Head Coach mark Dantonio and his staff have already assembled on of the top recruiting classes in the Big Ten for 2009. However, they would certainly like to add one or two more key pieces to the puzzle and Michael Buchanan could be the perfect fit.

The 6-foot-6 Buchanan is has narrowed his choices to four schools, Michigan State, Illinois, Purdue and Vanderbilt. All of them have offered him a full scholarship, as have over a dozen other BCS Conference teams.

Buchan has already taken official visits to Illinois, Purdue and Vanderbilt. His last official visit will be the weekend of January 16th when he visits Michigan State.

Buchanan is rated a 4-star recruit and the #15 defensive end in the nation by Rivals.com. He is projected to be an outstanding pass rushing end at the next level.

This past season Buchan actually played middle linebacker in order to prevent teams from focusing or double-teaming him. The move to that spot paid off as he racked up over 100 tackles, had double-digit TFL's and was named All-State.

After he returns from East Lansing Buchanan plans on sitting down with his family and coming to a decision.

Buchan is one of two defensive ends that will be on campus the weekend of the 16th; the other is Bernardo Nunez of New Jersey. The graduation of Brandon Long and Dwayne Holmes as well as the fact that Trevor Anderson will be a senior, makes the defensive end position a top priority. Coach Dantonio is looking for someone who has a skill set similar to former Spartan and current NFL star Julian Peterson. Peterson excelled at Michigan State as an edge pass rusher after converting from linebacker.

Another positive aspect in Buchanan's recruitment is the fact that he is a solid student who understands that taking care of business in the classroom is just as important as doing so on the football field. The academic aspect is surely something that is not going unnoticed by college coaches.

Spartanmag.com will be following up with Buchan after his visit to find out his impression of Michigan State and a timetable for his decision.
