Versatile guard Mayfield inks with UGA

Franklin County has had a handful of signees in the last 20 years, but none to the level of Demario Mayfield. The versatile guard out of Carnesville (GA) signed with the University of Georgia on Wednesday. He is ready to have a big senior year and head to play for the Dawgs in 2009.

"My first goal is to win the first ever Region championship here at Franklin County and then I will get ready to do big things at Georgia," said Mayfield. "We have played for the Region championship the last three years and we have lost to Hart County each time, so I only have one more chance and that is what I am focused on."

Even though he has his mind set on Franklin County goals, the 6-foot-3, 180 pound UGA signee was all about the Dawgs on Wednesday. Georgia jumped on him early and he made his long commitment official.

"I have been committed to Georgia for over a year now, so I was really excited to sign with them. I couldn't really sleep Tuesday night because I was so ready to sign with Georgia. It was a big day for me."

A big day it was as multiple media outlets joins many Mayfield's family members, his Franklin County teammates, his coaches, and other local supporters that joined him in his celebration.

"Not many small town kids get to do this," Mayfield shared. "This is a once in a lifetime moment for me and my family and it feels great."
