OL Wilkes keeping options open

While most other prospects have either started taking their official visits or narrowed things down, offensive guard Khalil Wilkes has remained single-minded in his focus, directing his energy toward his senior season.

The 6-foot-3, 285-pound prospect from Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep believes he will have plenty of time to sort through the recruiting process and make an informed decision once his high school playing days are over.

"I actually still haven't been thinking about recruiting much," he said. "I've just been thinking about my football team right now. We're doing alright. We started out with a tough first couple of games and lost both of them. Since then we've done well. We're 5-2 and have a game this Saturday."

Perhaps one reason Wilkes feels comfortable in taking his time is he has already seen what a lot of schools have to offer. His last unofficial visit was over the summer to Wake Forest, but he has also taken trips to Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Stanford, Virginia and Boston College.

He has not yet had a chance to visit Vanderbilt and UCLA -- two schools he has a lot of interest in -- but he may take official visits to Nashville and Los Angeles later.

"I don't really have a time frame for things. I'm just going to finish off the year right and then focus on my future. I'm still pretty much open.

"I'll be thinking about how good my degree will be for me once my football career is over. If football doesn't work out I'd like to have good plans for other things. I'm also going to look at environment, the coaches and how I like the rest of the guys on the team."
