Settle's son a star in West backfield

It's never easy being the son of a football coach.

It can be even more difficult when your father is the running backs coach at the University of Wisconsin. That said, Leighton Settle hasn't shied away from his father's lofty position and popularity.

This week, caught up with the junior from Madison (WI) West High School to discuss some early action in his recruitment.

"Illinois and Iowa have been sending me letters almost every week," said the 5-foot-10, 170-pound running back. "I just recently started to receive some mail from Oregon, as well."

Settle is coming off an outstanding performance last week, carrying the ball 37 times for 273 yards and five touchdowns in a win against Madison East.

"I wouldn't say it's something I expected," Settle said. "But, I've been working hard and I just need to keep gaining yards every game."

The name should sound familiar to Badger fans as Leighton is the younger son of current running backs coach John Settle. Coach Settle is in his second season at Wisconsin after an eight-year stint at Fresno State.

"I'm used to it by now," he explained. "At first it was kind or cool because everyone knew me because of my dad. "That has subsided and I'm use to it now. We keep it low key at home. He lets me learn from my own mistakes and stuff. He doesn't do a lot of coaching when he's at home."

This summer, expect to see Settle's name on the national scene as he plans to camp at various universities in hopes of garnering some more attention.

"This summer I plan on attending some camps. I don't know which ones, but I'm going to try and get my name out there some more," he said. "To tell you the truth, the Big Ten isn't really the conference I want to play in. If it's my only choice, obviously I'll play there. I'm trying to get some letters from the SEC and the Pac-10."

The following questions were supplied by Tom Lea. Tom spoke to (John) Settle earlier this week about the recent success of his son, Leighton.

Q: Finally, another player that had a big rivalry game and played really well was your son, Leighton Settle. How impressive was that performance against Madison East?

John Settle: I'll tell you what, he's playing very well right now. I've always said he's special; he has the chance to be very special. The only thing that is going to stop him is him. He's got to take care of his academics and do those things and if he does, he may have the opportunity to go anywhere in the country. It's a big win for (Madison) West, and I'm glad that he's able to enjoy some success both individually and as a team.

Q: Do you give him some little pointers along the way?

John Settle: No, the mom does that. (Laughing)

Q: Is that the easy way out?

John Settle: Yeah, pretty much. (Laughing)
