August 25, 2008's Superlatives: The 'D'

With the 2008 season set to kickoff in just days, takes an in-depth look at Auburn's defense. Check below as Bryan Matthews and Jeffrey Lee make their picks for best veteran, best freshman, most improved veteran and freshman, and much more.

Best veteran

Bryan's pick: Jerraud Powers
Powers has been consistently good from the start to the end of two-a-days. He's AU's best defensive back and also becoming a key leader for a young secondary. Powers is not AU's biggest or fastest player and he probably won't be a high NFL draft pick, but he's been the best of a talented defense this fall.

Also considered: DT Sen'Derrick Marks and LB Tray Blackmon.

Jeffrey's pick: Sen'Derrick Marks
In 2007, playing at the strongside defensive end position, Marks racked up 43 tackles, nine tackles-for-loss and two sacks. This season he's back inside at his more natural position, defensive tackle, and could be on the brink of an even bigger year as a result. Marks will be the anchor of the defense, and has the abilities to be a difference maker inside for the Tigers.

Also considered: DE Antonio Coleman, DB Jerraud Powers and LB Tray Blackmon.
