France talks Spartan commitment.

Michigan State picked up an big commitment yesterday when 6-foot-6, 275-pound Dan France of North Royalton High School in Ohio selected the Spartans over a host of other BCS programs. France had a total of 18 scholarship offers on the table including ones from fellow Big Ten schools, Iowa, Purdue, Northwestern and Indiana. rates France a 3-star prospect and the #21 strong side defensive end in the nation for the class of 2009. He is also rated the #23 prospect in talented loaded Ohio. His commitment gives the Spartans three commitments from top 30 prospect s in the Buckeye State. France becomes the 15th commitment to the class and will certainly only enhance the Spartans national recruiting standing. asked France about his commitment and how things came about.

"I was pretty much down to Michigan State, Iowa and Indiana," he said. "I spoke with Indiana and they said they had filled up at the position they were recruiting me for (tight end), so it basically came down to Michigan State and Iowa and I just felt like Michigan State was the best fit for me."

What were some of the things about Michigan State that stood out and made the decision to become a member of the Green and White the best one for you?

I really like the coaches for one, plus Michigan State plays Notre Dame, Michigan and Ohio State every year so that was a positive," France said. "I also really liked the strength and conditioning coach too. He is kind of a drill sergeant type, but I think you kind of need that in the weight room."

So how did the Spartan staff react when you decided you were coming to Michigan State?

"They were real excited. First, I called Coach Narduzzi and spoke with him and then he put me on with Coach Dantonio. He was happy to hear that I was coming to Michigan State."

Michigan State is having a very strong year on the recruiting front, did that impact your decision to come to Michigan State?

"A little bit, I know they are having a good year and that makes me feel good that I will be coming into a good situation and we should do real well in the Big Ten."

It was reported that you had been in-contact with some of the other Spartan recruits. Is that the case?

"Yes, Nate Klatt and I have been texting each other for a couple of weeks," France said. "I texted him right after I spoke with the coaches at Michigan State and told him I had committed."

A lot of speculation has surrounded what position you will play at the next level. What position do you currently play, what position does Michigan State want you as, and do you have a preference?

"Right now I play stand-up outside linebacker for my team and when we go to the Nickel I play rush end. We also have been doing some 3-4 and I have been playing on the defensive line in 5-technique. I prefer to play defense. Michigan State wants me as a defensive tackle and that is fine with me. I will play the 3- technique."

The Spartans like to utilize a defensive tackle that can attack the backfield from the 3-technique. The 3-technique tackle attacks the B-Gap. He needs to be both physically strong and quick.

As with many Ohio recruits France grew up a Buckeye fan. He talked about that.

"Yes, I liked Ohio State, but after that Michigan State was my next favorite Big Ten team," he said. "I am looking forward to playing against them now."

France has been working on getting stronger and faster this summer. We asked him about his numbers in the database and he indicated that his bench press is up 20-pounds to 295 and his squat is up over 50-pounds to 405. Just for good measure France has also raised his ACT score as well. He informed us that he scored 24 this past spring to go along with his 3.5 GPA. will be following the newest member of the Green and White this fall as he helps lead his North Royalton High School team.
