Walker shaping up the defense
Before DeWayne Walker was named defensive coordinator, UCLA's defense was porous. Walker tweaked the attitude and with basically the same players turned the defense around in what many hailed at the time one of the truly great coaching jobs in recent memory.
It was Walker's defense that was the spearhead for one of the greatest thrills of 2006. Who can forget UCLA stopping USC from playing in their third consecutive National Championship game. That game goes down as one of the truly great wins for UCLA in the rivalry.
Walker's job performance impressed and that was the reason he was a candidate to replace outgoing Karl Dorrell.
When Rick Neuheisel was hired he the media know that his first bit of business as UCLA head coach was to retain Walker as defensive coordinator.
Somehow Neuheisel was able to pull it off and Walker was retained much to the delight of the Bruin faithful.
As usual the defense is flying around making plays this spring. The names of some of the players have changed, but the attitude and the toughness that UCLA is now known for has remained.
