Bennett looking to improve depth

When a defensive coordinator takes a new job, most of the time, he is asked to rebuild a defense, or give the defense a makeover.

That is not the case for Pitt's new defensive coordinator Phil Bennett. Bennett comes to Pitt after a head coaching stint at SMU. Prior to SMU, Bennett was a defensive coordinator at Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, LSU, Purdue and Iowa State. Many of those defensive units were ranked in the top 10 on his watch.

With seven returning starters, including the nation's leading tackler, Scott McKillop, it's not as if the cupboards are bare. Bennett does not have to retool the defense. He only has to develop its depth.
