Tide holds scrimmage

The Alabama football team went through its second scrimmage of the spring on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium as the UA offense looked to gain some measure of redemption from last weekend's dismantling by the defense.

On turf slowed by heavy Friday rains, the Crimson Tide went through drills before closing the scrimmage to media. A few notables from pre-scrimmage work:

*** When the first offense went through its initial team drill, it featured a two-tight end set with Travis McCall and redshirt freshman Chris Underwood. As with last week's scrimmage, the receivers in the two-tight set were Earl Alexander and Mike McCoy, with Terry Grant in the backfield. Offensive lineman Drew Davis was at right tackle, and there were no changes on the offensive front.

*** The second offense's first run-through included Roy Upchurch at the running back spot, with Brandon Gibson and Marquis Maze on the outside. Running back Jeramie Griffin also took a turn with the second group, as did newly-converted offensive tackle Charles Hoke.

*** Wide receiver Darius Hanks, as he did in last Saturday's pre-scrimmage drills, ran with the first group as the slot man in a three-receiver set.

*** Brian Motley took a snap at center with the third group, though he was still in a black jersey, signifying no-contact status.

*** Wide receiver Will Oakley did not go through individual drills at all. He worked on a stationary bike during the media's viewing period, but was not in a non-contact jersey.

*** No changes were apparent in defensive drills. Marquis Johnson continues to work with the first group at cornerback in the nickel package, but with the second group in the regular defense.

*** With Motley's move to the offensive side and Alfred McCullough's move to defensive end, walk-on Juan Garnier is working as the third noseguard.

*** Others in non-contact jerseys were defensive end Milton Talbert, wide receiver Nikita Stover, offensive lineman Patrick Crump, running back Glen Coffee, safety Travis Sikes, cornerback Lionel Mitchell and longsnapper Paul Silvey.

*** BamaOnLine.com will have video and a photo gallery from Saturday's drills coming soon.

*** Stay with BOL later Saturday for full coverage of Nick Saban's post-scrimmage press conference.
