Big Star Set To See TCU Spring Game

While looking at the 2009 recruiting landscape in the state of Texas, it's easy to see that there is a ton of talent just like every other year. The difference this year for TCU is obvious. The Frogs have hatched an aggressive recruiting plan that has seen the program target and offer more top flight players than ever before at such an early juncture.

With the new found strategy, interest in what the Horned Frogs have to offer to potential recruits has skyrocketed to an all time high. With an unprecedented 7 commitments before the month of March has ended, the Frogs seem to be on the fast track to landing a Nationally recognized class that will continue the momentum that Coach Patterson and his staff have built. PurpleMenace.Com caught up with Calvin Howell (6-4, 280), one of TCU's top targets, to get his take on the recruiting process and to see where the Frogs stand in the bid to land his services.

"Man, it's been crazy. It's going good but it's crazy right now" said Howell. "I got three more offers in the mail today from Baylor, LSU and Iowa. It seems like I'm getting like three offers a day right now."

With the offers continuing to flow in daily, does the fact that new schools are trying to enter the picture have an any affect on his ability to narrow down his choices?

"Yeah, it makes it hard because there are so many of them but I have a pretty good idea about what I'm looking for. I have a top 5 right now and those 5 are the schools I'm really focusing on."

So does TCU have a punchers chance in the recruitment of this mammoth defensive tackle?

"Yeah, I like TCU a lot, they are in my top 5 for sure. They have a lot going for them. I really like their coaching staff, those guys are all really cool. One thing that's important to me is the education I get and I know at TCU, I could get a degree that could benefit me for 50 years after I'm done with football."

With an offer list that consists of these programs, TCU, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, LSU, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, Iowa and Kansas to name a few, it's easy to see why Howell's head must be spinning right now. So what other schools join TCU in Howell's top 5?

"My top 5 in no particular order are TCU, Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St. and Missouri. I plan on visiting TCU's spring game on April 12th and I'll be bringing my family with me. I hope to visit Oklahoma too, between TCU and Oklahoma I probably won't visit too many other schools (He's already visited Texas). I want to make a decision by the end of our spring practice which is like a month and a half away" said Howell.

So what is it exactly about TCU that makes the Frogs stand out in Howell's mind? Is there anything in particular that helped TU land in his top 5?

"It's a lot of things really, I like the size of their campus, there's a lot to do in Dallas/Ft. Worth, they have small classes, like 20-1 student to teacher ratio and they have a great football program. I could get a good degree from a school that has a good academic reputation."

Add to that the fact that Howell has built a strong relationship with Coach Chad Glasgow over the years and you can see why the Horned Frogs are in such good shape with Howell. Stay tuned to PurpleMenace.Com as we check back in with Calvin after the spring game to get his thoughts.
