New Orleans corner high on Southern Miss.

Though he has yet to receive his first offer, New Orleans (La.) O.P. Walker cornerback Deron Wilson has a number of schools that are showing him heavy interest. Despite that interest, there is one offer that may end his recruitment very early.

Wilson lists Minnesota, Kansas State, LSU, North Carolina, Ole Miss and Mississippi State as some of the programs that are interested in him. However, the school that he is most interested in is Southern Miss.

"I went to the Southern Miss Junior Day," Wilson said. "I loved it. The facilities are nice. Most likely that's where I'll go to. Coach Frank Wilson is my first cousin and I trust everything he's saying and I love the environment there."

Though USM has not offered yet, Wilson thinks they may be close.

"The coach came down here and he said he's going to break down my tape," he said. "After he breaks down my tape they are going to offer."

If Southern Miss does end up landing the 5-foot-9, 156-pound Wilson, the Golden Eagles will be getting a lockdown cornerback.

"I'm a great cover guy," he said. "I'm a student of the game. I love watching film. I'm like a coach on the field. I tell the safety, don't worry about helping me. I've got my man, you can help the other corner."

Last season O.P. Walker was knocked out of the Louisiana 5A playoffs in the semifinals but Wilson still has a state championship to his credit, two in fact. His 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams were the 2007 state champions and have a strong shot at repeating this spring. Wilson recently ran a 10.8 in the 100 meters.
