Elusive Florida RB commits to UGA

A prospect that really emerged this summer was Frostproof (Fla.) running back Carlton Thomas. Thomas reeled in offers from Notre Dame, Clemson, Georgia, Auburn and others over the last few months. He planned on taking all of his official visits this fall before committing, but he made a surprising decision Sunday afternoon.

"I had sat down with my head coach and my family before and I knew Georgia was where I wanted to go," said Thomas. "Georgia was the first school I visited this summer and I was really impressed. After that I visited Clemson and Auburn and neither one of them impressed me the way Georgia did."

He has already visited Notre Dame officially and he thought about visiting Iowa and West Virgina, but he realized this weekend Georgia was where he wanted to be.

"I committed to Georgia today," said Thomas. "I just knew I did not want to go too far away from home or my family. I thought about everything real hard, talked to my family, talked to my coach and I knew Georgia was where I wanted to be."

Thomas' unofficial visit to Athens took place early in July and he saw everything he needed to see while on campus.

"I just loved it up there," he said. "I was amazed by everything at Georgia. They have great facilities, I love the coaches and I really like their academics too. They took me around and showed me the classes for my major (sports management) while I was there and it was great. I just got a great feel for Georgia during the visit and I felt I fit in there real well."

In the end, this 5-foot-7, 170-pound all-purpose back took the advice he was given from his head coach.

"He just told me to go with my heart and that is what I did. He has always told me that from the beginning and that is how I made my decision. I talked to my coach about my decision, I told him I went with my heart and that I chose Georgia. He was very happy for me, he congratulated me and it feels great. It feels like a weight is lifted off my shoulders."

The University may have impressed Thomas and he went with his heart, but his recruiting coach David Johnson played a part in it as well.

"Coach Johnson is a real cool guy. He is a great family guy and he really cares about me off the field like he does when I am on the field. He does not always talk about football with me, but he will talk about my family and things like that too. I spent some time with him during the visit and it was great. He has always been honest and real up front with me about how Georgia would use me in their current running back situation. I really like him a lot."

"They just want to get the ball to me," Thomas stated. "They have talked to me about how they will use however they can to get me on the field to make plays. They told me they know I can do more than just run the ball and they want to use that. They just want me to help the team by making plays."

Thomas is happy, his coach is happy, Georgia has to be happy and his family is in full support as well.

"They love it that I have made my decision and that I have chosen Georgia. They like that it is not too far away, but far enough. They have to been to about every one of my games since little league and they can get up to Georgia a lot too. They told me if I like, then they love it. They are very happy about this."

Another thing the family has to be happy and proud of too is the way Thomas explained his commitment to Georgia.
