ASI Insider Report: One sport for Richardson

One sport for Richardson (By Chris Nee, Warchant.com)

So far during preseason practices all the talk at quarterback has been focused on Drew Weatherford and Xavier Lee, with Christian Ponder recently throwing his name into the debate. D'Vontrey Richardson has performed well at times but after spending the spring on the baseball diamond he has some catching up to do.

"It is going pretty good right now but I am just a little bit behind," Richardson admitted. "I am studying every night trying to keep up with the days. I am watching film whenever we go into meeting. Most of all I am listening closely. I am starting to pick it up pretty well."

The two-sport star is quick to point out that playing both baseball and football in the spring was tough to balance. That experience has forced him to make a difficult decision about his future.

"The spring put me behind a lot," Richardson said. "(The other quarterbacks) are way ahead of me. I just have to make some sacrifices like next year I have to give baseball up. I just need to concentrate on football from now on … Being a quarterback has to be a second nature to you.

"I decided that about three days ago. It was tough. I am still having doubts about it but to make it to the next level and to be a quarterback here you have to make sacrifices."

That sacrifice is a major one for Richardson. He said that while a sophomore season on the diamond will not happen, he is not ruling out a return to baseball down the road.
