Still tying up loose ends

When we last spoke with them three weeks ago, Jaivorio Burkes and LaTravis Washington were hoping to square away the remaining hang-ups with their academic situations in order to report to Lincoln for fall camp with the rest of the Huskers' class of 2007.

Where do things now stand?

"My last week (of summer school) is this coming week, then I'll be heading out there," Burkes told HuskersIllustrated.com. "Probably like a week after I'm done with this I'll be leaving (for Lincoln)."

Burkes is still very confident that he will easily pass the Biology and English classes he is taking.

"Yeah, in both classes I have an 'A'," Burkes stated. "In one I have a '95', and in one I have a '93'."

The Nebraska coaching staff continues to stay on top of Burkes' situation.

"I pretty much talk every day to coach (Bill) Busch. "He just tells me to keep grinding and to get ready to play some Husker football."

If Burkes gets his preference, he'll use his first year in Lincoln to further develop before starting his playing days as a member of the Pipeline.

"I'd rather redshirt my freshman year, learn the system, and get stronger and faster," Burkes said. "Then I can have my breakout season my redshirt freshman year."

Unlike Burkes, LaTravis Washington has done all he can on his end academically. He raised his ACT score to a 16 and his core GPA to a 2.82.

"Coach 'E' (Phil Elmassian) said they're trying to get me in there in August," Washington said. "I did what I had to do, it's up to them now."

He has sent his transcripts in and now all he can do is wait for the official word.

"The NCAA clearinghouse has got to get them the word," Washington said. "We're just waiting for them."

If Washington is able to report in Aug. with the rest of Nebraska's team, he will be slotted at outside linebacker.

If he has to delay the star of his Husker career for a semester, he will take some classes at Manatee Community College in Florida.

HuskersIllustrated.com will bring you any further developments with Burkes and Washington.
