Spoon takes charge

"...And a little child shall lead them." --Isaiah 11:6

You may not expect perhaps the hardest hitter on the Missouri defense to draw his inspiration from scripture. But by quoting The Book, Sean Weatherspoon shows he goes against the book.

"It even says in the Bible that a baby can lead," said the Missouri linebacker. "Anybody can lead."

Well, not anybody. Perhaps the biggest criticism of the Missouri defense over the last few years is that it has lacked that leader, that mean-spirited animal at the linebacker position. Enter the true sophomore from Jasper, TX.

Weatherspoon says he's just "trying to do my thing." So far this spring, that thing has been leveling ball carriers with regularity. If a big play has been made by the Tiger defense, Spoon has been in the vicinity. And he has nearly always followed it with a fist pump, a scream or some other show of emotion unseen by a Tiger linebacker in quite some time.

"His enthusiasm is contagious," Gary Pinkel said. "He's only a sophomore, but if you have a guy like that who is very talented and has that kind of enthusiasm, it goes all over the field."
