Competition motivates Garner
Despite finishing 5-3 in the Mid-American Conference last season, Kent State finished near the bottom of the conference in passing offense. Sophomore wide receiver Phil Garner is confident things will be different in 2007.
"This year we're really trying to emphasize on competing," said Garner about the focus of the wide receivers this spring. "We were really put down last year because we were at the bottom of the list in the MAC. We have a good offensive line coming back, running back corps, our quarterbacks, we're deep in that position but the receiving corps, that's what we're trying to work on."
Three of the top receivers from last season have graduated and another-Darren Rogers-has moved to quarterback creating an opportunity for several wide receivers to make a move up the Kent State depth chart.
"It's a real opportunity and it's also motivation," Garner said. "It's a challenge. Like (Darren Rogers) said, we have competitors and when somebody puts a challenge before us we want it."
Competing for playing time at wide receiver are Cameron Bobb, a three-year letter winner, Garner, junior Shawn Bayes, freshman Aaron Robinson, sophomore Coleman Lynn, redshirt freshman Leneric Muldrow, junior Mark Woodson and junior Shawn Lewis.
